The Strokes: The New Abnormal Album Redesign (Personal Project)
As a huge The Strokes fan, I have been listening to this album religiously since its release in 2020. The original album art is of Basquiat's Money Bird. I'm also a huge fan of Basquiat's work so it was a match made in heaven for me! As the years went by and the more I listened to the album the more it inspired me to want to imagine what I would personally design for the album to look like. The New Abnormal takes many of its musical motifs from 80's music. It's evident from their synthesized pop elements throughout the album as well in their sampling choices. Their single 'Bad Decisions' samples it's catchy vocal melody from 80's classics 'Dancing with Myself' by Generation X.
With the title being The New Abnormal, thoughts of a new world come to mind especially with the year this album came out. A space theme was also prevalent in some of their music videos. I decided to run with that idea of an 80s space theme. I took a lot inspiration from 80's space movie posters. I wanted it to look grainy and old but still have that modern twist for an album release of this century. I noticed most of theme used the primary colors blue, red and yellow so those are the main colors in my design as well. My font choice is thick, graphic with a futuristic feel. The actual scene that I depicted is of the Brooklyn Bridge that has now been converted into a portal of sorts that would take anyone who crossed it into this "New Abnormal".
